Monday Run Day + Stretching

Happy Monday!

I’ve said it before, but I really like Mondays. I like getting back into the routine and being productive. Not that I’m not productive on the weekends, eh scratch that, I’m not usually that productive ha.

Workout

Monday- 1 mile warm up, 3 miles faster pace, 2 mile cool down. It was supposed to be a 1 mile cool down, but J was happy so I snuck one more mile in for 6 miles total. I’m trying to focus more on a warm up, and cool down and less on my overall time. Forgetting the clock can be a good thing on non-speed work days=)

It’s no secret that running is my choice of workout, but something that is often over looked is the stretching. I never stretch before my run because I don’t see the point of stretching my muscles while they are cold. I do however stop and stretch once or twice throughout a typical run.

During my freshman year of college I had a terrible stress fracture in my right leg that put me out of running for 6 months. That has been my only injury I’ve ever had due to running and I’d like to keep it that way. One of the ways I think I keep myself injury free is remembering to stretch after a workout. (there are many other factors to staying injury free, here is a great article from the professionals;)) *I compeletly agree with his #1 way, listening to your body. Great article!

My typical and favorite stretches that I do after a run only take me about 10 minutes. (2 min per stretch is plenty of time for me) Here they are:

stretches the back of the calf, one foot flat on the ground, the other balances on top of the flat one, body in plank position

The rest are obviously not pics of me. The first one was hard enough to try and capture while balancing haha source, source, source, source

I’ll do this on the side of my treadmill. stretches and strengthens the back and front of the lower leg/calf(great for shin splints)

str_ham1_s

simple stretch for the hamstrings. I will grab my forearms on each arm doing this stretch and it also stretches the lower back

stretches-after-running-inside

Stretches the inside of the legs and the hips if you push the hips forward

stretching-before-running

butterfly stretch to stretch the inside of legs

And one more picture because I just think he is too cute. This is what J wore to church yesterday. Ya, after this pic I changed his short tie haha but the second pic didn’t save=(

About Sugar Plum Runner

Welcome to the Sugar Plum Runner! I grew up in WA state, but currently reside in UT with my husband Josh, son Jackson, and 2 daughters Lily and Claire. I love running, but I have never been so inspired to run, race, and blog about it since 4 years ago after I had Jackson. I grew up playing soccer and cheered in high school. My favorite part of both sports(and yes I consider cheer leading a sport) was the conditioning. I found myself running after practice was over on my own. That's when I realized that running may be the sport I really loved.
