I got up nice and early yesterday before I headed off to Girls Camp for my church and just enjoyed being outside. My quads were pretty sore from soccer so I took it nice and slow.


Let’s Talk Abs

The sweet Natalie asked me about some of the ab workouts I do. I often just post that I did some kind of ab/arm workout. So today, I’m going to share with you some of my favorite ab workouts. I get most of them from the Nike Training Club app.

As you all know, I love running. I have found that working ab routines into my weekly schedule has helped my running immensely. I found this great article by Olympic runner Lolo Jones that gives more great ab moves and benefits your abs give to running.

1. My all time favorite move is the side plank crunches. It’s working your side abs, your legs, and your arms. I always feel it the next day. *The smaller the movement the more you feel it!


2. Planks are great for a full body workout. Works your core, arms and legs.

photo-113. Lower back workouts are just as important as ab workouts. I remember learning in my health classes that working out opposing muscles has great benefits. (For example, if you’re going to work out your biceps, workout your triceps too.) So, the opposing muscle for abs is your lower back. Superman’s are a great move for the lower back.

photo-13 photo-124. Crazy Ivans make me sore on the sides of my abs as well as my upper abs. I love moves that are dual in purpose. Oh, and they workout your arms if you use a weight;)

5. The last move I’ll share is one that is simple, but I’m always counting down the seconds until I’m done. V-Ups, always let me know I’ve had a good workout if the next day or even later in the day I can feel my abs getting sore.

  2. I LOVE Nike Training Club! The workouts are really tough, but you feel so accomplished after 🙂

  3. we do an ab section at the end of each body pump, this one has planks and boy I feel it. It really does work your whole core

  4. I like regular planks the best! I usually work out my abs twice a week at the end of my strength training class. It’s definitely my favorite part and they definitely kick our butts!

  7. I love the NTC app! It’s a great go-to when I need some variety in my workout. The abs workout is killer! My least favorite is Russian Twists.

  8. I do abs as part of the yoga sculpt class I teach, but I am thinking I need to add more! I haven’t had a sore abs day in a while!

  9. This is awesome! I love that app, too.

    For me, planks are my go-to for ab work. They’re SO efficient and I can feel the burn almost immediately. Plus, it works your arms and shoulders 🙂

  10. Planks are the enemy. As are crazy Ivan’s. Like seriously? I just discovered the second ab video on NTC, I haven’t used it yet, but am looking forward to giving it a try.

  14. We did lots of side planks last night in yoga! I love working my core 🙂 They say abs are made in the kitchen so I try to keep that in mind too by keeping my nutrition in check.

    I agree with how important abs are for running. I noticed such a difference when I started during ab work, and now I do it every other day and it truly helps! I love the 8 minute ab videos! So great!

  16. Planks are definitely my favorite ab workout! I like to challenge myself to see how long I can hold them.
