The Haunted Half Race Recap

Saturday I ran The Haunted Half with my 2 SIL’s and our close family friend Nat. I ran the race last year and want to say that this year was quite different for many reasons. I talk more about them at the end.

The race didn’t start until 9am so I wasn’t up too early. My neighbor was running the race too so I caught a ride with her. Friday morning I had woke up with a cough/cold and Kelli was so sweet when I had a huge cough attack on the way up. I felt so bad. Luckily, I brought enough cough drops during the race.

Kelli was meeting another runner so she got on the bus. I waited for my family and we caught the last bus up. I’m so glad we did because it was FREEZING up in the canyon.

All of us waiting at the capitol for our bus. I dressed up as the wicked witch from Sleeping Beauty and everyone else dressed 80’s(under their sweats). I had nothing 80’s so I was the odd one out haha

Luckily, we only had to wait in the cold canyon for about 20 min before it was go time. The lines for the porta potties were really long and Whit barely made it. Oh, and so did the headless horseman. .

We all kept our warm clothes on till about mile 4. There was a bag drop, but we were all too cold to put our sweatshirts in them.

The plan going into the race was that we would run the first 3 and then assess how we felt. After 3 we all felt great so we kept running till mile 6. Whit and Alisha stopped to go to the bathroom and me and Natalie walked on until they caught up with us. That killed a lot of our time since the line was so long. We weren’t worried though because we all felt great!

20131027-171041.jpgWe ran until we hit the second hill. It’s pretty steep so we walked after we made it to the top. They changed the course this year and instead of 5 brutal hills there were only 3. We ended up walking after 2 and then walking a bit before mile 12.

I can’t even tell you how proud I am of these ladies. Whit just had a her second baby a couple of months ago, Nat has never ran in her life, and Alisha had only ran 8 miles before running the race! The fact that we only had to walk 3 times was huge, and not to mention we were running 10 min miles which is faster than all 3 had been training!

where the race ended, so pretty

This race was so special to me, it was so fun and different to be running to help someone else accomplish a goal. I really love watching others fall in love with running(at least that’s what I’m hoping happened=))

They all pushed it hard the last stretch(Nat had a horrible blister and kept pushing).

I hope we get to do more of these, and I hope everyone gets to experience a race like this.

Haunted Half

I think the race went really well. It was significantly larger than last year. Like 2 busses to 9! I remember last year in my recap I was hit with all the hills, this year the course was a lot better, more down hill and flat roads.

They ran out of shirts and gloves which I think is odd since you know how many signed up.

The after party was awesome, bounce house, pizza, doughnuts, candy, water, apple juice, apples, ice cream, and probably more that I didn’t see.

The shirt and medal are pretty awesome, the shirt even had a hood.

About Sugar Plum Runner

Welcome to the Sugar Plum Runner! I grew up in WA state, but currently reside in UT with my husband Josh, son Jackson, and 2 daughters Lily and Claire. I love running, but I have never been so inspired to run, race, and blog about it since 4 years ago after I had Jackson. I grew up playing soccer and cheered in high school. My favorite part of both sports(and yes I consider cheer leading a sport) was the conditioning. I found myself running after practice was over on my own. That's when I realized that running may be the sport I really loved.
