Big wknd recap and running downhill

Friday-walk up to the temple with my mom 2.5 miles

Saturday- 6 miles with Heather 5 of them ALL downhill!

Heather and I are running the Drop 13 race June 14th. We’re both hoping to PR and what better way than with an all downhill race? Most of UT’s races are downhill to compensate for the high elevation. I’ve lived in UT for about 6 years now and I still have days where I can’t catch my breath, it’s a bit ridiculous. I ran the Big Cottonwood half 2 years ago and the next day my legs were trashed! Running downhill can feel nice for awhile, but the aftermath can be so painful.

Heather and I decided to train downhill to prepare for our upcoming race so come race day, we’re not super sore and we can just cruise down the canyon. We started at the top of Suncrest(the top of a very large windy hill) and ran down. We were feeling great until we stopped. We instantly felt it in our thighs(me more in my quads). Oh and the next day our legs felt so sore! Going down stairs is a huge chore ha Do you think the more we train going downhill the less we will hurt?

At least we had amazing views during our run=)

Friday night we had Josh’s family over for dinner and smore’s. I LOVE nights like these.  It was so fun to see the little boys get so excited about roasting marshmallows. I think they each had 5 plus lots of other non-roasted mallows ha

Saturday, as mentioned above, I ran with Heather and Josh biked and then we headed to the outlets. We are all in need of some new Spring clothes, especially Jackson. He just had a big growth spurt so we let him pick out some new shirts and shorts. He was so excited! Since most of his clothes are from my sister’s little boys’ he kept saying, “New for me??” He’s easy to please.

That night we went to a church meeting. Trying to keep a 2.5 year old quiet for 2 hours was  a challenge, but he did pretty good(we couldn’t find a babysitter).

Sunday we went to church then headed to my in laws for a BBQ. Um, homemade hamburger buns? Yes, please! I brought the homemade potato salad, my family LOVES potato salad, so we don’t mess around.

Welcome to the Sugar Plum Runner! I grew up in WA state, but currently reside in UT with my husband Josh, son Jackson, and 2 daughters Lily and Claire. I love running, but I have never been so inspired to run, race, and blog about it since 4 years ago after I had Jackson. I grew up playing soccer and cheered in high school. My favorite part of both sports(and yes I consider cheer leading a sport) was the conditioning. I found myself running after practice was over on my own. That's when I realized that running may be the sport I really loved.

    It’s so weird how downhill running makes you sore, but it makes sense I guess cause you’re constantly having to control your descent. Man that s’more looks good, I’m really looking forward to summer campfires now!

  2. downhill running is something I try to avoid, I love just the flat course! Good luck with training! I love topping my hamburger with avocado and egg, weird, but YUMMY!

  4. Those burgers though! Looks so good! I try not to charge down when I run downhill but it’s so tempting and hard not too!

  5. I’ve never thought about downhill running hurting your legs because I have done SO few races that have much “down” in them! The Drop 13 looks fantastic 🙂

  7. I did the Drop 13 last year and I remember at one point it was SOO painful during the race, so you can imagine how good it felt in the days following. Good idea training for the downhill. Maybe I can come cheer you on!
