Tips to Running Outside

** Tonight is our girls night at Pure Barre in Draper @ 6:45pm. We’ve got an awesome group going, but it’s not too late if you’re still interested(I’ll be doing another in a couple weeks).**

wednesday-4 miles outside

I can’t even remember the last time I ran outside. Last year I ran outside almost every morning and absolutely loved it. This year, I think I’ve gotten way too comfortable on my good ol’ treadmill. I love that I can control EVERYTHING on my TM; temperature, speed, incline, music, bathroom, water, TV. I mean it’s all right there, it’s the perfect environment except it’s nothing like running outside. So for those a little afraid to get out of their comfort zone, here are a few tips.

Tips to Running Outside

1. Give yourself time to adjust- Everything is going to feel different and that’s okay. Don’t give up on it just because you had one bad experience running outside.

2. Dress for the weather- don’t get caught outside in the cold with not enough layers or in the heat with too many layers. Here’s what I wear in the winter, and in the summer while running outside.

3. Don’t go out sprinting- at least for me, my body needs time to adjust to being outside. I have to start out with a much slower warmup mile than when I’m on the TM because my body actually needs to warmup when I’m outside.

4. Be Safe!! Running outside means you have to be aware of your surroundings(one of the highlights and lowlights of running outside) because cars are not always looking out for you. Here’s a post on my running safety tips.

5. Last, Enjoy it! Even though the TM is comfortable and my ‘safe’ zone I always seem to go back to running outside. It’s so gorgeous here in UT and I love filling my lungs with fresh air and you just can’t get that on a TM ha

After my run yesterday, I met up with Bree at Kneaders and we had lunch together. Their soups and bread are so good.

J was dying to go to the park, but it was so HOT outside yesterday. What happened to our fall weather? We stayed for awhile, but not too long, J wasn’t dressed for the weather and I could tell he was getting hot.

We went to my mom’s house and helped her paint her room, and then I rushed home to make a delicious dinner. My sister Leah gave me the copy cat recipe to Olive Garden’s fettuccine. It was spot on and soooo good, oh and only like 6 ingredients(warning: it is not even a little bit healthy).

About Sugar Plum Runner

Welcome to the Sugar Plum Runner! I grew up in WA state, but currently reside in UT with my husband Josh, son Jackson, and 2 daughters Lily and Claire. I love running, but I have never been so inspired to run, race, and blog about it since 4 years ago after I had Jackson. I grew up playing soccer and cheered in high school. My favorite part of both sports(and yes I consider cheer leading a sport) was the conditioning. I found myself running after practice was over on my own. That's when I realized that running may be the sport I really loved.

  1. Shoot I can’t make it tonight but please announce it again and I’ll try to come! You know how I love barre 🙂
I made a Kneaders copy cat french toast recipe, sauce included, and it was AWESOME. I can’t remember where I got it but it was super delicious and also all of my calories for the week.

  2. The warm up is so important! I would suggest googling ‘dynamic stretching’ and doing some of these prior to a run. I always try and do a little bit of that before going all out!

    Have fun at barre tonight!
